An IBERIABANK/MARCO customer came to us this afternoon with an interesting letter, a copy of which is attached to this email. During a bank related discussion earlier today, Personal Banker Jeff Hogan picked up on a couple of comments made by the customer in which an opportunity to receive a large amount of money due to lottery winnings was mentioned. When Jeff pressed for more information, the customer acknowledged that he won the $5.5 million Spanish Sweepstake Lottery/International Program and is pursuing having his winnings sent to him.

To make a very long story short, we met this afternoon to delve more deeply into the circumstances leading up to his lottery jackpot. After spending about an hour on the phone and on line

Researching those mentioned in the attached letter, it finally became obvious that he is not the winner of this sweepstakes drawing. Having given out his bank information to the scammers, we immediately took the necessary security steps to protect his funds but he did seem a bit disappointed in the outcome. He agreed to stop all communications with the scammers and will not provide any additional information to them.

I just received a call from my customer letting me know the scammer called him home number three times while he was meeting with me. After asking what he should tell the scammer when he calls again, I suggested he give the scammer my phone number explaining, as his banker, the scammer would have to work thru me. We will see how that turns out.

This letter was received at his home on Marco Island and there is no reason to believe he is the only person in the Marco/Naples area targeted on this scam. So, please be on alert for this letter or any letter notifying you of such “winnings.” Remember, the scammers have graduated from Nigeria and are operating successfully out of Spain, Canada and the U.K. so don’t be fooled by where the contact originates.
